“UNCALLED FOR SLANDER”

BROADCAST ATTACK BY LABOUR CANDIDATE. MR G. H. MACKLEY DEFENDS CIVIL SERVICE. A passage in an election broadcast by Mrs Dreaver (Labour) was described as “an uncalled for slander” on the Civil Service by Mr G. H. Mackley (National), in an address in Masterton last night. When Mr Mackley defended the Civil Service there were frequent interjections. “If there has been any deterioration in the Public Service,” said Mr Mackley, “it has occurred since 1936.” A voice: “Do you deny that some heads of the Civil Service are working against the Government?”’ Mr Mackley: “From my knowledge you wouldn’t get a more loyal body anywhere. They are loyal to each and every Government. I was 100 per cent loyal to the Labour Government the time I worked under it. If anyone has any knowledge that any Civil Service head is working against the Government then he should place the matter before the appropriate Minister and not start rumours.”
