SERIES OF ’QUAKES
RECORDED IN UNITED STATES IN DIRECTION OF JAPAN. & IN OTHER AREAS. SEVERE SHOCKS INDICATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 14. TV series of earthquake tremors, coming from the general direction of Japan, has been recorded since midnight by the seismograph at Fordham University. A severe shock, estimated to be 7,300 miles distant, occurred at 3.37 a.m. The seismograph also showed a severe shock at 10.20 p.m. yesterday, about 8,400 miles: distant, in the direction of Burma. Shocks were still continuing at 9.0 a.m. today. At Weston College, Massachusetts, the seismograph recorded a destructive earthquake at 10.35 p.m. yesterday and another at 3.49 a.m. today, with its epicentre near the Solomons or the New Hebrides. The ’quakes continued for from three to four hours. RECORDS IN WELLINGTON LOCALITY ABOUT 1,500 MILES NORTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. From records at the Dominion Observatory yesterday, it was obvious that there was vigorous earthquake activity, most probably in the Pacific. At least five earthquakes were recorded, three of them big ones and there was a further one last night. The major shocks were just after 2 p.m., just before 4 p.m. and at 7.20 p.m. The locality was about 1,500 miles from Wellington, in a northerly direction. They may of course be under the sea.
