AMERICAN ANNOUNCEMENT. TWO SUBMARINES AND OTHER CRAFT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received'This Day, 10.13 a.m.) RUGBY, September 14. The United States Navy Department states: “The United States submarine Grenadier has failed to return from patrol operations, and must be presumed lost. In the Mediterranean area on August 23, a United States submarine and two submarine chasers were sunk as a result of enemy bombing. “In the South Pacific area on Monday night, 15 Japanese planes attacked Funafuti, on the Ellice Islands. One enemy aircraft was shot down. The damage done was slight.”
