NAVY LEAGUE

LADIES’ AUXILIARY. MEETING IN MASTERTON. A meeting of the committee of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held in Masterton yesterday afternoon, Mrs S. R. Gawith presiding. Others present were Mesdames W. R. Birch, R. C. Drummond, W. H. Robieson, S. Fletcher, G. C. Williams, H. Beetham, H. K. Mclntosh, T. Jordan, P. J. Borthwick, C. Cameron, Cook and Misses Cameron and Guild. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames A. Caselberg, D. Buchanan, E. G. Norman, W. G. Lamb, H. McKenzie Douglas, E. C. White, J. C. Forsyth, O. A. Bunny and Misses B. Vallance and J. McLaren. The Wool Committee reported that 55 garments had been sent to Wellington on August 13, and that 53 more garments were packed ready for transport. One local man had been supplied since the last meeting. Two letters of appreciation were received from men who had been supplied with woollen comforts. The packing committee reported that 15 garments had been sent to the Mission to Seamen. A large parcel of reading matter and playing cards had been packed and forwarded to the Mission. .The committee desire to thank all those who donated books, magazines and cards as well as those who assist with the knitting and those whose donations in money make it possible to purchase clothing for seamen who had lost their belongings through enemy action. A circular letter was received from Wellington, suggesting that Navy League branches might care to make some contribution to a fund being raised to assist the dependents of a number of members of a ship’s crew who recently were killed or who are missing on active service. It was decided to make a donation of £5 to this fund. The president and secretary reported having attended a meeting convened by the Mayoresses’ Patriotic Committee to discuss means of raising money to complete Masterton’s quota in the Patriotic Fund Appeal, and that it had been decided to appeal to the women of the district to make voluntary contributions as thanksgiving offerings for the victory in Italy.
