AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. CHILD SAFETY SERVICE. The thirty-first annual report o£ the Wairarapa Automobile Association for the year ended August 31, 1943, states inter alia:— The year commenced with a credit balance at the bank of £206 19s Id, and £B3l 13s 7d in the Post Office Savings Bank, and closed with £414 13s 4d at the bank and £354 2s 8d in the P. 0.5.8. During the year the sum of £lOOO was invested in Liberty Loans. Subscriptions for the year total £2858 5s 6d. The association’s grounds at Mt. Holdsworth and Featherston received attention during the year, additional native trees being planted and the grounds cleaned up generally. Owing to restricted travelling the number of visitors fell off considerably. Mt. Holdsworth will not be available from now on for the duration of the war. The child safety educational service was continued, 42 schools being visited. The number of lectures given were 83: screening of the film, “Safe Ways,’ 83- number of children addressed 5212: other institutions addressed. 7; number of people, 342. The number of bicycle guards painted while visiting the schools was 843. Members who made use of the “get you home" service (including members of other associations) were 69, the cost to the association being £59 0s 9d. Members are asked to read the rules of the A.A. handbook covering this service, the principal ones being:—(a) Members should not ring the association, as the patrols and staff have no authority to instruct garages to go out. (b) They must ring the nearest garage listed in the handbook, and give their full name and address, (c) After ringing for assistance they must wait at the scene of the breakdown, until the garage attendant arrives, and then sign the card.
