TAKEN PRISONER
U-BOAT COMMANDER WHO WAS DECORATED FOR SINKING ARK ROYAL. SUBMARINE DESTROYED BY AMERICAN PLANE. • (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9,55 a.m.) RUGBY, September 13. The United States Navy announces that the U-boat commander decorated for sinking the aircraft-carrier Ark Royal has been taken prisoner. The communique states that this man, Captain Friedric Guggenberger, was imprisoned recently when a. United States Navy patrol bomber sank his U-boat off the Brazilian coast. Five other Germans were also taken prisoner. Guggenberger kept his submarine on the surface and tried to fight the aircraft, instead of submerging, but his vessel was sunk in the first attack.
