COUNTY AFFAIRS.
MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY’S MEETING. MAIN HIGHWAY SUBSIDIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Mr E. W. Cheetham presided, there being also present: Councillors A. Forsberg, A. Gray, O. Welch, J. H. MacDonald and D. Bennett. The treasurer’s report, which showed a credit balance of £2651 Ils, was adopted. The clerk reported that rates received up to the last discount day for the East Riding amounted to £1699 15s 3d (70.8 per cent) and the total general rates received for the West Riding amounted to £1448 14s 5d (72.8 per cent). The chairman reported that he had requested the Resident" Engineer of the Public Works Department to inspect certain bridges on Highway No. 816. A letter was received from the Eketahuna County Council relative to an inspection made by their overseer of a portion of the Putara Road, and it was resolved that the sum of £BO be spent on repairs to this road. Details of the Main Highway annual estimates for the year 1943-44 were received from the District Engineer, Public Works Department, who ‘intimated that the subsidies granted were as follow: — Mauriceville - Hastwell Main Highway, £258; Masterton-Weber via Alfredton, £650; Dreyer’s Rock Road Main Highway, £405. The clerk reported that in making application for subsidies for the current year a total of £2140 had been applied for, and only £1313 had been approved of by the Main Highways Board. The county engineers reported on the completion of work on the Cleland’s Road Bridge. The Health Inspector for the district reported a case of diphtheria in the county during the last month. A letter was received from the SubArea Army office. Masterton, authorising the council to remove road block material which had been placed on the ends of certain bridges in the county area and had not been erected. The clerk was instructed to write to the authorities concerned suggesting that if the necessity for toe erection of these road blocks dice not now exist that the timber might well be sold to advantage and used in industry. A telegram was received from the Prime Minister relative to the holding of a Victory Parade in the county on Saturday next. It was resolved that it vzould be most difficult to arrange for any parade in country districts, and that the Prime Minister be advised that the council would be prepared to co-operate with the Masterton Borough Council in any action they may take in the matter.
The county engineer, Mr P. N. Jamieson, reported that the bridge known as Clarke’s Bridge was in need of urgent repair. The clerk was instructed to go into this matter immediately.
