ENEMY AIR ATTACKS

INTENSIFIED AGAINST BEACHES ALLIED INTERCEPTION. GERMAN ROAD TRANSPORT’ HEAVILY BOMBED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, September 13. An increase in the number of enemy planes attacking the beactes around Salerno was noticed yesterday, about 90 to 100 fighters being encountered, states a correspondent at headquarters in North Africa. Two of the larger efforts were intercepted by American Spitfires, four enemy planes being destroyed. Heavy strafing of enemy trucks was continued by Invaders for the fourth consecutive day, and 78 trucks have been destroyed in four days. On Saturday night Bostons and Pathfinders plastered the road junction of Corleto-Auletto-Sapri. In the region directly east of Salerno, Bostons and Baltimores bombed and strafed several hundred trucks. When day broke the attack was resumed by Warhawks, In-, vaders and Baltimores. Heavy and medium bombers -once again were brought from long-range targets to concentrate on road targets in the Naples area. In no case did they encounter enemy aircraft.
