BATTLE IN THE SALERNO AREA

Germans in Southern Italy in Danger of Being Cut Off NEARLY A DOZEN AIRFIELDS IN ALLIED HANDS ITALIAN BATTLESHIP AND OTHER VESSELS JOIN FLEET AT MALTA LONDON, September 13. The battle between the Allies and the German forces in Southern Italy is quickly taking shape. South of Naples crack German troops and tank units are making desperate efforts to loosen the grip’of the Fifth Army on its bridgehead. The fighting in all three Italian battle areas—the Calabrian toe of the peninsula, the heel on which Taranto and Brindisi are located, and the Salerno region, south of Naples— is co-ordin-ated. It acounts for the Germans fighting so hard in the Salerno area that if they do not hold the Allies there, there is a real possibility of the enemy troops further south being cut off. The Fifth Army is reported to be more than holding its own at Salerno. The battle here now seems to have reached its highest pitqh. In Italy’s heel, British forces have reached a strategic railway and road junction 100 miles from the Naples battlefront. Advancing from Brindisi, another British force is reported to have reached Bari, the chief commercial port of Southern Italy. Nearly a dozen airfields in Southern Italy are now in Allied hands. Only slight enemy resistance has been met with in Calabria. More Italian warships have arrived at Malta, amongst them a 25,000 ton battleship, which made a long and hazardous voyage from Venice, at the head of the Adriatic Sea. Other Italian warships which have reached Malta, are a 5000 ton seaplane carrier, four destroyers and several submarines.
