BATTLE FOR NAPLES
RAGING WITH UNABATED FURY FIERCE AIR FIGHTING OVER SALERNO ENEMY USING ALL AVAILABLE FORCES. ALLIED REINFORCEMENTS POURING IN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 12. The Mutual Broadcasting Company’s Algiers correspondent says: “The fight for Naples is raging with unabated fury. Thousands of Allied cargo ships and naval landing craft are pouring in reinforcements and supplies on to the beaches in the Salerno area. The enemy is throwing against us everything he can get into, the Naples area, just as he has from the moment our armada began unloading early on Thursday. He is smashing ferociously against our ground troops with every available fighter and bomber.'’ Reuter’s Algiers correspondent says Allied and German airmen fought desperate air battles almost continuously yesterday over the Salerno area. The Germans used about 120 planes, nine of which were shot down. The Vichy radio reports that all traffic is at a standstill in Rome. Most shops are closed. Food distribution is chaotic. The authorities are doing their utmost to feed the population.
