ALLIED PURSUIT

GENERAL MONTGOMERY’S COMMENT GERMANS MAKING SKILFUL WITHDRAWAL. MISTAKE TO UNDERESTIMATE ENEMY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 12. “It would be a great mistake to un-der-estimate the Germans,” declared the commander of the Eighth Army, General Montgomery, in an interview on the mountainous coast of southern Italy, discussing Italy’s surrender. He pointed out that the Italians ceased to be a fightiong factor at the end of July, when the Allies were still engaged in Sicily. “The Germans are conducting a skilful withdrawal from the south of Italy, fully exploiting demolitions and mines,” he said. “The Eighth Army is pursuing them on foot, and has covered 100 miles in seven days, which is fair marching for a soldier carrying a heavy pack. “I am sorry the Australians, who played a great part in knocking Italy out of the war when Africa was the battlefield, are. not here to see its final phases, but the Canadians who are with me now are first class.” MUSSOLINI SET FREE ACCORDING TO GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. LONDON, September 12. A communique from Hitler’s headquarters states that German troops have set Musolini free. The communique gives no details.
