MORE POWERS
NEEDED BY THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT IF AUSTRALIA IS TO BECOME GREAT NATION. DR. EVATT'S ADVOCACY. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, September 10. Unless additional powers were conferred on the one Parliament which represented all Australia, Australia would never become a great nation, said the Attorney-Gcneray, Dr. Evatt, today. He added that he would recommend to Cabinet that there should be as little delay as possible in referring the question to the people. Dissentient States in his judgment did not represent the opinions of their own citizens. “The success of post-war reconstruction depends on whether the task can be carried out by six State legislatures, with six different policies or whether it does not require action under plans laid down by a national Parliament. After the war, when the power conferred by the National Security Act is exhausted, the Australian Parliament will have no direct authority even to provide employment and to prevent unemployment.”
