HITLER SPEAKS

BUT ONLY ABOUT ITALY NO MENTION OF DISASTERS IN RUSSIA. PAST ASSURANCES RECALLED. LONDON, September 10. For 16 minutes tonight Hitler broadcast to the German people. His subject was Italy. He assured his listeners that the Germans had foreseen the collapse of Italy. The men who got rid of Mussolini were responsible, he said, for the country’s collapse. He accused Marshal Badoglio of telling the Germans that the Italians would never capitulate and then tried to reassure his listeners that Italy’s collapse was of little military importance.

More than ever before, he declared, the Germans were united. The Allied air attacks on Germany would be smashed and the Luftwaffe would retaliate. It might be necessary for tactical reasons to give up some ground.

Hitler made no mention of what had happened! to his armies in Russia. Last year, it is pointed out, Hitler said that Germany and Italy would never be split apart.
