ITALIAN ATTACKS ON GERMANS. REPORTED IN SOME AREAS. LONDON, September 10. Allied headquarters in North Africa announces today that forces of the United States Sixth Army, having overcome resistance, have established themselves in the Naples area. The Eighth Army has continued to advance in the toe of Italy.. Reports from neutral sources, which are unconfirmed, refer to further Allied landings in Italy. Following upon a German threat of action tagainst Italy, the Rome radio announced that an unidentified plane dropped several bombs on Rome last night. In northern Italy, the Italians are reported to have driven the Germans from Tortona, near Turin. Heavy fighting is also reported at Bologna, to which Italian reinforcements are hurrying from Florence. Verona and Brescia are held by the Germans, but the Italians control Venice, Milan and Turin, and also Rome, where soldiers are guarding the German Embassy. The Algiers radio,, appealing to the Italians to oppose the Germans “while there is still time,” stated that the Germans already are in control of Genoa, and added: “The German invader is vulnerable, but only for the moment, and if he has the chance he will recover and hit' out with all his barbaric cruelty.”
The Zagreb radio reported that Italians and Croats are fighting in .Dalmatia as a result of an order to disarm the Italian troops there. A message from Budapest says that Allied warships have been seen deep inside the Adriatic Sea.
