REPORTS OF WIDESPREAD FIGHTING
Position Obscure at Many Points NAZIS CLAM EFFECTIVE CONTROL IN NORTH if ALLIED OPERATIONS IN NAPLES AREA / (By Telegraph—Press Association—Extraordinary.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 9. While the Germans are fighting the Allied forces in the Naples area, other reports indicate that widespread fighting is going on between German and Italian troops in Italy. A Berne message states that there are increasing reports of grave incidents in Northern Italy. German and Italian troops are reported to be fighting in the streets of Tortono and also in Pavia. The Germans disarmed Italian troops guarding a bridge at Voghera. Jean Paquis, a Paris radio commentator, declares that battles are raging in the heart of Italy and that German and Italian troops are locked in vicious fighting throughout Italy. The German High Command has attempted tp gain control over the Italian communications system, but Italian troops at many points, driven on by pro-Allied officers, attacked the Germans and fierce fighting resulted. Conflicting with earlier reports that important North Italian towns are safely in Italian hands, the German radio today as- - ’ serted that German troops have occupied all strategically important points in North and Central Italy and that the Italian Army has been disarmed, but admitted that some fighting had occurred.
