RIMUTAKA TUNNEL
PLEDGE WILL BE HONOURED ASSURANCE BY PRIME MINISTER. EARLY PRIORITY WHEN WORKS ARE RESUMED. An assurance that the Rimutaka Tunnel would be proceeded with as soon as possible was given by the Prime Minister, when speaking at the State Theatre last night. This year, said Mr Fraser, there was no mention of the Rimutaka Tunnel or of any special works, because of the war, in the election manifesto. “I want to make it as clear as words can make it,” said Mr Fraser, “that our pledge to put a tunnel through the Hill is just as binding today as it was when it was made and will be honoured. The Government is convinced, as Mr Savage was, that a tunnel is necessary for the progress and development of the Wairarapa. As soon as public works can be got going again, it will fall in its proper place and it will be an early place. I want to make that very clear. A good many works have had to be postponed because of the diversion of men and materials for war /purposes, but when we start off with a Public Works programme —if the country gives us the opportunity to do so —this tunnel will certainly be ■ one of the jebs.”
