WAR WORK
OF AUSTRALIAN WOMEN. PRAISED BY MRS. ROOSEVELT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE; September 6. Mrs. Roosevelt had a crowded day in Melbourne today, making a series of rapid official calls in the.city and suburbs. Her first call was at an American general hospital, where she met many of her countrymen and countrywomen. Then followed visits to the Red Cross, W.A.A.F. headquarters, luncheon witth the chiefs of all the women’s services, the inspection of a large munition works, the afternoon’s proceedings closing with a drive through crowded streets to the Town Hall, where 3000 people greeted her at a public reception arranged by the Lord Mayor. Speaking at the women’s services luncheon, Mrs Roosevelt said that from what she had seen so far, the women of this country were doing a greater variety of jobs than her countrywomen. War was forcing more women to face the future and its responsibilities. As citizens of a young country, Australian women might be able to prevent some things happening instead of having to correct them after they happen."
