TRANSPORT LICENSING
NO. 2 AUTHORITY SITTING MASTERTON-CARTERTON BUS SERVICE. ANCILLARY LICENCES GRANTED. The No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr P. Skoglund) sat in Masterton yesterday afternoon, whe# the following cases were dealt with:—l The Masterton-Carterton passenger service operated by Martin Smith was reviewed. Mr Skoglund granted extra buses which in effect will restore the service to that operating before the curtailment. Mr Skoglund said it was apparent that the service was quite inadequate to meet the demand. He said that he had had to curtail the .service some months ago to save petrol and tires. Under present conditions there was no way out but to grant extra buses. The presence of visiting service men in a “dry” district and the proximity of a “wet” district meant a great demand on the bus service to and from the “wet” district.
J. A. Henderson, of Pahautea, Featherston, applied for a new goods service licence in the Featherston County for the cartage of wood, metal, milk and farm equipment. Mr J. Macfarlane Laing ,who appeared for the Featherston licensed operators, opposed the application so far as the extension of operations into Featherston was concerned. An amended licence was granted restricting operations to the Pihautea and Pukio roads.
Ancillary goods services: The applications of L. V. Pahl, L. T. Daniell, W. Burridge & Son, Ltd., R. King and the Estate O. J. Percy (Masterton); J. G. Donald (Featherston); Pain and Kershaw, Ltd (Martinborough); Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-op. Association, Ltd (Greytown); E. T. Phelps, J. D. Goodin, W. G. Parker (Carterton); A. T. Cooper and H. M. Simpson (Eketahuna) were granted.
