Mr E. Richards, of Cole Street, Masterton, has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Mr Russell Turnbull, who had announced himself as an Independent for the Timaru seat, has withdrawn on medical advice because of throat trouble. . Miss Noeline Bisset, who had been on the staff of Messrs Smith, McSherry and Carruthers, Pahiatua, during the past three years, has left to join the Civil Nursing Reserve in Wellington. The death is reported from London of'Dr H. C. Hart, one of the leading Dutch economic and colonial experts. He was a former Director-General of the Netherlands East Indies, Department of Economic Affairs.

The engagement is announced of P.F.C. George Richard Naeve, U.S.M.C., fourth son of Mrs B. Naeve and the late Mr H. Naeve, of lowa, U.S.A., and Joyce Frances, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Percy, Matahiwi. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital last night of Mrs Ivy Jane Thompson, wife of the late Mr George Thompson, at the age of 49 years. She was an inmate of the hospital for the past 17 years. Her husband predeceased her about 18 years ago. She is survived by three sons, two overseas, and one in the Air Force in New Zealand. The-funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving Hyde’s Chapel following a service at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. The death occurred yesterday morning at the Beach Hospital, Otaki, of Mr James Cowan, journalist and author, and one of the greatest of Maori scholars, at the age of 73. Mr Cowan, who had been ill for many months, was one of New Zealand’s best-known writers and a recognised authority bn Maori customs, history and beliefs. Mr Cowan was twice married. His firstwife, a daughter of Mr E. O. Nicholas, of Niue Island, died in 1909. His second wife, who survives her husband, is a daughter of Mr Henry Stowell (Hare Hongi), of Wellington, Maori translator and interpreter. Of this marriage there are two sons, the eldest of whom is serving overseas with the Fleet Air Arm.
