WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute held in the Matarawa School, Mrs W. Knowles presided. It was decided to send a donation tothe Makogai Leper Fund. The monthly coampetitions were won by the following: —Senior: Air Force pullover, Mrs L. Rogers 1, Mrs W. Knowles 2, Mrs W. Ticehurst 3. Cream puffs, Mrs T. Smith 1, Mrs L. Rogers 2, Mrs W. Know.les 3. Flowers, best three bulbs, Mrs L. Rogers 1, Mrs A. Goodin 2, Mrs J. Hicks 3. Juniors: Air Force pullover, Miss J. Conwell 1. Cream puffs, Miss B. Sadler 1, Miss N. Conwell 2, Miss G. Conwell 3. Flowers, best three bulbs, Miss B. Sadler 1, Miss N. Conwell 2, Miss G. Conwell 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames G. James, R. Gallon, G. Brazendale and Miss B. Knowles.
SNOW AND RAIN GALE EXPERIENCED IN DISTRICT. ■ ■ ■■ l<~ / The Carterton district experienced a southerly gale over the weekend, heavy rain falling in the town and district, and snow on the surrounding hill country. In Carterton the watertables were unable to carry the volume of water and, consequently, footpaths were flooded. Low-lying land in the surrounding district was covered with water as the result of rivers and creeks overflowing. No damage of any consequence is reported. Personal Items. Mrs H. Hall, of Wellington, is staying with her sister, Mrs J. McKenzie, Carterton. Her mother, Mrs Diamond, is seriously ill. The death occurred suddenly at Granity of Mr E. Chew, eldest son of for many years a resident of Carterton. the late Mr and Mrs E. J. Chew, and He was at one time first assistant at the Belvedere Cheese Factory. He was manager of the Nireaha Cheese Factory and of various factories in the South Island. He leaves a widow, a son and two daughters. Mr W. Chew, of Carterton, is a brother. Fat Stock Hard to Obtain. Owing to the very dry season last year, which left the district very short of winter feed, stock generally have never ' properly recovered. Consequently • butchers are finding a difficulty in securing fat stock. Schools Resume Work. The State schools in the district resumed work this morning, after a fortnight’s vacation. Mortality Among Lambs. The rough weather has caused very heavy mortality among young lambs in many parts of the district.
