RUSSIAN RAILWAYS
FURTHER MILITARISATION. WITH VIEW TO DISCIPLINE & RESPONSIBILITY. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, September 5. President Kalinin has decreed a further militarisation of the Russian railway system by introducing quasi-mili-tary ranks for personnel. The Moscow radio says officials will be of commissioned and non-commissioned rank, while other railwaymen will be called ‘workers of railway transport.” All personnel will wear green army-style uniforms, with the badge of a crossed spanner and hammer and a small fivepointed star. The “Pravda,” in a leader, says: “The national life depends on the efficiency of railway transport and military discipline is necessary. The bestowal of military rank aims at strengthening the authority and responsibility of individuals.”
