SEVERE STORM
‘ GALE AND HEAVY RAIN RIVERS IN FLOOD. LOSS OF LAMBS EXPECTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A severe south-easterly storm, of w’hich the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay area seems to have felt the greatest force, set in on Friday night and extended through the weekend, with the maximum severity reached in the early hours of yesterday morning. In Wellington, Saturday afternoon sport suffered either curtailment or abandonment, and people stayed by their firesides rather than brave the icy gale. At Havelock North more than five inches of rain were registered in one gauge between Saturday and Sunday mornings. Because of timely radio warnings, stock losses by the flooding of farmland were largely avoided, though there may be some loss of lambs because of the severity of the weather. Strong winds and heavy rain were experienced in Wellington and in other parts of the province and many rivers flooded their banks.
