LADIES’ MATCH. WAIRARAPA BEATEN. In spite of atrocious weather, the representative women's hockey match between Wellington and Wairarapa was played at Newtown Park, Wellington, on Saturday. Wellington beat Wairararapa by 3 goals to nil. Play was surprisingly fast, clean and open. Judging by the performances of both teams it was obvious that had the conditions been perfect a thrilling exposition of hockey would have resulted. Wellington opened the score through a forward rush initiated by Miss T. Monk, cen-tre-half, the ball going to Mrs Lamason, right-wing, thence to Miss D. Gray, centre-forward, who netted from close in. Shortly before the spell Miss Gray topped off a good rushing movement with a tricky shot, the half-time score being in favour of Wellington by 2 f goals to nil. Wairarapa tried hard to lessen the leeway in the second spell, but the forwards seemed to be hampered by the slippery ground. The last goal of the match was well manoeuvred by Wellington’s halves and vanguard, the ball travelling from left, to centre, to right, Miss D. Kemp's shot being cleared; but Miss Gray, following up smartly, returned it into the net with a good clean shot. Owing to the accident to the Wclling-ton-Masterton train on the Rirnutaka Hill on Saturday, the Wellington B and junior ladies’ teams did not reach Masterton till 3.30 o’clock and consequently the matches were not played.
Mrs M. Parker, of Carterton, and Mrs Townsend (nee Mona Parker), late of Carterton and now of the Hutt, have presented a cup for annual competition between the Wairarapa and Wellington senior A teams.
