HEAVY BLOW
IN VICINITY OF NAPLES ANTICIPATED IN UNITED STATES. ITALIAN SURRENDER THOUGHT IMMINENT. (By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. September 4. The surrender of Italy is considered .imminent, says the New York “Herald'•Tribune’s” Washington correspondent. Tc is revealed in authoritative quarters that Messrs Roosevelt and Churchill are expecting “political developments of the greatest significance” within the next few days: in the wake of the Allied invasion of the Continent. Mr Churchill is reported to be prolonging his stay in Washington in ordek to confer with Mr Roosevelt on questions-which are expected to arise from the surrender, including a reexamination of the military plans in the light of the altered conditions. Speculation envisages a heavy amphibious blow in the vicinity of Naples rather than an attempt to push forward up the peninsula. The American Seventh Army is expected to participate in this phase of the campaign. . The Madrid correspondent of the British United Press says it is reported from the Italian frontier that peace demonstrations have broken out in all the big Italian cities, particularly Milan and Turin. The Italian underground radio has broadcast orders from “the committee for the defence of the Italian Navy to all Italian warships in ports in the lonian Sea a # nd lower Adriatic Sea. “The Italian *Navy,” is says, “must remain where it is. It must not be scuttled, and it must not be sacrificed for Germany. It will be needed in the near future.”
