FACTORIES IN PARIS
ATTACKED BV FLYING FORTRESSES BATTLE AGAINST ENEMY FIGHTERS. LOSSES ON BOTH SIDES. LONDON, September 3. United States bombers made a heavy attack on factories in the Paris area today. They were escorted and covered by large numbers of fighters. Five airfields in Northern France were also attacked. The Flying Fortresses attacking the Paris area met heavy opposition and shot clown 23 enemy fighters. Four enemy fighters were destroyed by Thunderbolts and two by Spitfires. Eight heavy bombers and two fighters are missing from the mornings operations. MANY FIRES STARTED RAIDS ON RAILWAY YARDS & POWER STATION. BOMBERS GIVEN BIG ESCORT OF FIGHTERS. LONDON, September 3. The Fighter Command’s biggest single operation of the year was carried out last evening when squadrons of Spitfires and Typhoons, escorted U.S.A.A.F. Marauders and R.A.F. Bostons, Mitchells, and Venturas to bomb targets in northern France. . The Air Ministry says that preliminary reports suggest good results, in spite of the intense anti-aircraft fire. Numerous fires were started. The main attacks were carried out by Marauders, Mitchells and Venturas. The targets included a power-station' at Mazingarbe. Bostons attacked the marshalling yat cis at Serquex flying so low that they felt the blast of their own bombs. Reports so far show that at least three enemy fighters were destroyed by Spitfires, one of which is missing.
DAMAGE & CASUALTIES DESCRIBED BY PARIS RADIO AS HEAVY. LONDON, September 3. “British and American air forces carried out a new terror raid against Paris,” says the Paris radio. “For the first time the centre of the capital was hit, particularly districts on the left bank of the Seine. Damage and casualties are believed to be heavy.”
