OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
MARKETING CONTROL (To the Ecu tor) Sir,— Listening to Mr Holland’s speech on Tuesday evening, I heard him say that he would, if returned to power, do away with the internal marketing of honey and eggs. Now, as an ordinary civilian, I feel it should be made known that if control of eggs and honey were stopped we civilians would get all the honey and eggs we wanted. We don’t want that. At least the patriotic civilian does not growl about control in war time. If we have them (eggs and honey) British people will be short. Army, Navy and Air Force hospitals, old age pensioners and babies will not be supplied, because we people who have the money and supplies at our hands will be unpatriotic enough to buy at our will. No, let us have control. Let us be British and not complain. We haven’t had to sacrifice much yet. Mr Holland also wants people to be able to buy State houses. Well, if that were allowed to happen, then the same old game of speculation will start again. Money is available for people to build through the State /Advances. What is wrong with that if they want their own house? I would say Mr Holland’s speech was typical of an election speech, only more so. He promised everything under the sun. In war time one doesn’t expect to get things at the expense of our war effort. We must make every sacrifice to win the war—and then the peace.—Yours, etc., “THANKFUL.” Eketahuna, September 1.
