RUMOURS DENIED
PORTUGAL MOT CHANGING WAR POLICY. ACCORDING TO PREMIER. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 2. The Portuguese Prime Minister has issued a communique denying rumours, which are spreading, suggesting that Portugal will soon be changing its policy regarding the war. - Prior to Dr Alazar’s announcement, the “Evening Standard’s” diplomatic correspondent stated that Portugal had ordered a complete mobilisation of naval personnel and was serving call-up papers for the Army. This, the correspondent said, might be followed by . a declaration of a state of war between Portugal and Japan, as a protest against Japanese atrocities in Macao and Timor. Adding that 200 Portuguese soldiers had been killed at Macao, the correspondent stated that Portugal had received reports detailing atrocities against civilians. At least three divisions of the army were available, the correspondent said, for despatch to the Ear East. The Portuguese fishing fleet was being converted into armed trawlers and mine-sweepers.
