DAMAGING BLOWS
AGAINST SOUTHERN ITALY STRUCK BY LIGHT & MEDIUM BOMBERS. HEAVY AIRCRAFT GROUNDED BY BAD WEATHER. LONDON, September 2. The air offensive against Southern Italy was hampered today by bad weather, which grounded heavy bombers. Light and medium bombers made five separate sweeps over the toe of Italy and attacked road and railway junctions and demolished a radio station. A zinc factory in Sardinia was severely damaged and great havoc was caused to railway tracks north of Naples. The southern exit to the yards was closed. Not one Allied aircraft was lost. MIDDLE EAST BOMBERS ATTACKS ON HEEL OF ITALY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) Although Middle East heavy bombers were able to attack airfields in the heel of Italy, the North-West African Strategical Air Force was grounded yesterday, by bad weather, for the first time in two months, reports a correspondent at Allied Headquarters. Light and medium bombers continued to harass enemy communications in the toe of Italy, while Wellingtons bombed the Aversa railway yards, north of Naples. Spitfires of the Desert Air Force, escorted by Bostons, Baltimores and Mitchells, on these and other operations, did not encounter any enemy aircraft.
