Mrs Alex Holdsworth recently arrived in New Zealand from Canada, and is staying with Mr and Mrs S. Holdsworth, Sussex Street, Masterton. The engagement is announced between Trixie Meggan, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. C. Corkill, Feilding, and lan, youngest son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Booth, Park Road, Carterton. The death occurred suddenly shortly after 10 o’clock last night, in Wellington, of Major James Robert Kirk, M.B.E. Major Kirk, who was in his later 60’s, was born and educated n Dunedin, was a barrister, and was also director of several important companies. Mr William Burdette, the new American Minister to New Zealand, was farewelled by President Roosevelt before his departure, a Washington cablegram states. He said he had not received particular instructions. “Things arc going so nicely in New Zealand that there will be little to do except watch the ships go by,” he added. The death has occurred in Napier of Mr James Duncan, who for many years was closely identified with farming interests in Hawke’s Bay. Mr Duncan, who was born at Tawa Flat in 1866, was for eight years farming at Eketahuna before acquiring a property at nay View, where he was similarly engaged for the past 35 years. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mr C. J. Duncan (Putorino), Mr G. J. Duncan (Wairoa), Mr A. S. Duncan (Bay View), Mrs W. E. Mitchell (Lay View), and Mrs R. C. Goldstone (Wairoa).
