An Election Matter.
A correspondent, “Elector,” says that Mr D. Thompson was not accorded a vote of confidence at Mauriceville, as stated in a report of his meeting there, but a vote of thanks only. Women’s Franchise Jubilee. A meeting of women will be held in the Y.M.C.A., Masterton, at 7.30 p.m. tomorrow to celebrate the jubilee of women’s franchise in New Zealand. Miss Kirk, J.P., of Wellington, will give an address and Mrs J. Robertson will preside. Day of Prayer. In the Regent Theatre, Masterton, at noon tomorrow the Masterton Ministers’ Association will hold a service of intercession in conformity with the King's wishes for the observance of a day of prayer. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, invites all citizens to attend. Early Bird Art Union. In connection with the “Early Bird” art union a £lO prize was won by “First Time” (Tinui). Prizes of the value of £5 went to “E. and A,” Greytown, W. J. Dwane, Carterton, “Try Your Luck,” Eketahuna, “Finis,” Masterton, and “Warren,” Masterton. Address at Belvedere. Aircraftman Donald Thompson, Democratic Soldier Labour candidate for the Masterton seat, addressed an appreciative audience in the Belvedere Hall last night. Mr Knowles was in the chair. The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks. Aircraftman Thompson will speak at the Whatman School at 8 o’clock tomorrow night, and on Saturday night at the Upper Plain Hall. Hansell’s Dance. Members of Hansell’s Sports Club will hold a dance in the Masonic Hall tomorrow night. The music will be supplied by Ashton’s Orchestra and modern and old time dances will be on the programme. A prize of £1 will be awarded the winners of the Monte Carlo competition.
Government Housing. Speaking of Government housing, the Minister of Works, Mr R. Semple, said in Greytown last night that 16,000 State houses had been built and another 7,000 had been built with the aid of State advances loans. After the war it was proposed to erect a staggering number of State houses by prefabrication methods.
Governor to Visit Butter Factory. Mr W. D. Harris advised suppliers and shareholders present at the Konini Dairy Company’s meeting on Monday that the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, would inspect the company’s factory during September. “Sir Cyril,” said Mr Harris, “had made a request that he might be conducted through a New Zealand butter factory and ’ the Government had decided to accord the honour to Konini.”
National Party Campaign. A. series of well-attended political meetings has been addressed by Mr G. H. Mackley, National Party candidate for the Masterton seat, during the past few days. At Kakariki on Tuesday afternoon Mr H. Billington Senr. presided; at Hukanui on Tuesday evening, Mr Twentyman presided; at Marima yesterday afternoon Mr T. Fouhy was in the chair, and at Mangamaire last night. Mr M. Lawson presided. At all meetings, Mr Mackley received an attentive hearing and votes of thanks were passed unanimously, at Kakariki, on the motion of Mr J. Welsh, and at Marima on the motion of Mr L. Timmins. At Mangamaire on the motion of Mr R. J. Smith, a vote of thanks and confidence in Mr S. G. Holland as leader of the National Party was carried, also unanimously.
