NAZI GRIP
FASTENED ON DENMARK SOME REFUGEES STILL REACHING SWEDEN. MANY INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE ARRESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 1. Germany’s grip on Denmark is now complete. Re- ' > fugees are still arriving in Sweden, in small motor-boats and fishing smacks, and even canoes.
How many lives have been lost in the bid for freedom will never be known. The Germans have rammed and bombed many ships. Eleven Danish warships made a daring “second escape” from the Germans through the narrow channel between Helisingborg and "Malmo toward the Baltic Sea under the noses of patrolling German warships, planes and shore batteries. They reached an unrevealed Swedish port undetected. The German news agency says that the big Danish coast defence ship Niels luel, which was previously reported sunk by German bombs, has returned to its base after being ordered to do so by a German bomber, and also by the order of the Danish Admiral Wedel.
Swedish newspapers, quoting refugees, say that arrests of influential persons continue in Denmark. They include Pastor Kaj Munk, who has been an outspoken Nazi critic.
