Setting up a home is a difficult task for. Australia’s 1943 war brides. Among the problems to be faced are coupon expenditure, the high prices of furniture and all household effects, and the housing shortage. In Sydney many agents have had no houses, flats or apartments to let for nearly a year. The prices of some household requirements are three times those of pre-war days. Housekeeping experts estimate that Australian brides need a minimum of 224 coupons and £250 for linen and furnishings for a flat containing one bedroom, a lounge,' sunroom, kitchen and bathroom. This excludes the purchase price of floor coverings, cutlery and' electrical appliances, all of which are in very short supply. For electrical appliances, permits must be secured. Items which cannot today be purchased include easy chairs, lounge suites, clocks, vacuum cleaners, carpet sweepers, saucepans and kettles.
