COOPER CUP CONTEST.

SOCIAL ON SATURDAY EVENING.

The Wairarapa’ Coursing Club held a most successful meeting at the Akura Plumpton yesterday afternoon when the Cooper Cup was competed for. The event was won by Mr S. Swanson’s (Napier) Just Bet. Results: —

Cooper Cup (open):—Semi-final: Just Bet (S. Swanson, Napier) beat Cyclone (James and Gray, Masterton), 4-4; Royal Routine (Mr S. Gerrand, Masterton) beat Handy (T. B. Noonan, Hastings), 3-24. Final: Just Bet beat Royal Routine, 4|-2. An enjoyable social was held by members and supporters of the club in the Orange Hall, Masterton, on Saturday night. The music for the dancing was played by Mr A. Barnes and Miss I. Vincent played an extra. Mr Roy McEwen was M.C. Supper was served by a ladies’ committee. In honour of her approaching marriage, a popular young member, Miss P. Hanley, was made a presentation by Mr J. H. Pay ton (patron) who wished Miss Hanley future happiness. Mr J. Eradbury (president) endorsed Mr Payton’s remarks.

First Sergeant Robert McMahon, U.S.M.C., replied on behalf of Miss Hanley. Members of the ladies’ committee, Mesdames McEwen, S. D. Geary, L. M. Archer, K. Buick, W. Jensen and J. Hanley also received presentations and gifts were also made to Mrs W. Williams for the use of her grounds for tin bare racing; to the judges, Messrs L. M. Archer and W. Jensen; to the slipper, Mr R. McEwen; to Mr Bradbury for his active interest in the club, and to Mrs M. S. Buick for the use of the plumpton ground. Musical items were contributed by Miss A. Hanley and Mr I. Spring (duet) and Miss Broughton (songs).
