The Swiss newspaper “Die Tat’s” correspondent on the Italian frontier states that about 400,000 German troops are now in Italy. Italian newspapers are now openly declaring that the German authorities are blocking the Badoglio Government’s efforts to withdraw Italy from the war, say Allied correspondents on the Italian frontier. Travellers from Italy who are arriving in Switzerland reported that city life is again beginning in Milan, but it is a Spartan life with the families living and cooking in the open. Those who have salvaged beds, tables, and chairs from the -wreckage have installed Them under trees. Troops are helping with the demolition of dangerour walls. Two tramways out of 15 arc working, and temporary railwaystations are operating outside Milan. The postal services are again functioning. MANY ENEMY FIGHTERS SHOT DOWN IN ATTACKS ON ITALY. The enemy put up very strong fighter forces in an effort to defend the rail system and thus preserve the mobility of his land forces. BOMB TONNAGES SHARE OF SICILY AND ITALY, (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, August 23. ■ Last month the North-West African air forces dropped nearly 13.000 tons of bombs on Sicily and Italy. In the first half of August nearly 5000 tons were dropped, says a correspondent at Allied headquarters.
