. Mr and Mrs P. A. McHardy, Havelock North, are spending a few days in Masterton. Mrs R. A. Bunny and Mrs H. O. Bunny, Perry Street, who have been visting Napier, have returned to Masterton. The death occurred at her residence, “Mayfield,” Cunninghams, Feilding, of Mrs D. P. Buchanan, at the age of 72 years. Mrs Buchanan leaves a family of six sons and two daughters. The sons include Mr Ronald Buchanan of Pahiatua. An enthusiastic reception was accorded Captain T. L. Macdonald (Opposition, Mataura), when he took his seat in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, following his return to New Zealand after nearly three years' active service overseas. A cordial welcome to Captain Macdonald was extended. on behalf of the House, by the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holland). The funeral of the late Mr J. L. Sullivan took place in Masterton this morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Patrick's Church by the Rev Father' N. Moore and Dr Gilhooly conducted the service at the graveside. Many beautiful wreaths wore in evidence, including one from the directors and staff of Messrs Paykel Bros, Ltd., Wellington. The pall-bearers were Messrs S. H. McJorrow, E. McMaster. P. Lyons and D. B. Curry. A pioneer aviatrix, Mrs Hilda Beatrice Hewlett, widow of the novelist, Maurice Hewlett, died at Tauranga, aged 79, says a Press Association telegram from Auckland. She had lived there since 1928. In 1910, at the age of 46, she learned to fly. Returning to England she brought an aeroplane with her and obtained the first pilot's certificate issued to a woman by an aero club. She next opened a flying school at Brooklands. On the conclusion of the last war she visited New Zealand, and five years after her husband's death she settled at Tauranga. The interment of the late Mrs A. Sayer took place at the Masterton Cemetery this morning. Adjutant Stone conducted the service at the Salvation Army Citadel and also that at the cemetery. Wreaths were sent by the following: Sincerity Hockey Club, staff of Cathie & Sons, Ltd.; staff of W. Rigg. Ltd., Salvation Army Home League; ladies and staff of Autumn Lodge, Wellington; companies of No. 2 Mess, Royal New Zealand Air Force, and Blue Bird Restaurant. Sergt. D. Sanson and Messrs C. Sayer, W. Sayer and W. H. Trudgeon acted as pallbearers. The sudden death yesterday of Councillor W. Duncan creates a vacancy on the Wellington City Council, the second so caused in the life of the present body. The election of the substitute councillor lies in the hands of the mayor and remaining councillors. When a vacancy occurred through the death of Councillor L. McKenzie, the council selected Mr W. McKeen, M.P., who had headed the list of unelected candidates at the last council elections, to fill the vacant seat, but there is no law or precedent binding the council to follow such a course. The next on the unelected list would be Mr C. H. Chapman, M.P. The death has occurred in Hastings of the Ven. Kenneth Edward Maclean, Archdeacon of Hawke’s Bay. He was aged 60 years. Born in Napier in 1883, Archdeacon Maclean was ordained deacon in 1911 and priest a year later. From 1911 to 1914 he was a curate at Portsea (England), but on his return to New Zealand in the latter year he went to Rotorua as vicar for four years, and in 1918 he went to Woodville, where he remained three years. From 1921 to 1937 Archdeacon Maclean was at Havelock North. He was appointed Archdeacon of Hawkes Bay in 1930, and from 1933 to 1937 he filled the position of Vicar-General of the diocese.
