STATEMENT BY MINISTER

CONTRADICTED BY MAYOR OF WELLINGTON. EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN ON TRACK REPAIRS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A flat contradiction of certain statements made by the Minister of Manpower, (Mr McLagan) relating to the employment of women as tram track repairers in Wellington was contained in a statement made by the Mayor, Mr Hislop, yesterday. Mr Hislop stated that contrary to Mr McLagan’s assertion that the manpower officer had not been approached to supply men for the work, two officers of the City Tramways Department had together discussed the matter with the* manpower officer on August 10, and that this was made known to the Minister at the conference with the Prime Minister on Friday, and supported at that meeting by the production by the general manager of the tramways of the entry in his diary recording the discussion.
