METROPOLITAN MEETING CHIEF EVENT TO COUNTLESS. A SIX-HORSE SMASH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 21. At Addington today the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club opened its National meeting. There was a large attendance and the sum of £104,755 10s was handled on the totalisator, compared with £76,041 on the first day of last year’s National meeting. As the result of an accident nearly two furlongs from home in the Metropolitan Maiden Handicap, C. M. Laing, driver of Scott Axworthy, and P. Gallagher, driver of Gold Rosette, were taken to hospital, and H. J. Smith, driver of Treasured Gift, received facial injuries. The accident occurred through Princess Maritza making a bad break when in the lead with Fancy Goods, while rounding the bend for home. She caused Gold Rosette, May Scott, Treasured Gift, Scott Axworthy, Sideline, and Francis Logan to fall, and Anazah was pulled up.
