INVASION OF EUROPE
BY THE ALLIED ARMIES EXPECTED BY GERMANS AT ANY MOMENT. SOME INDICATED FEARS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 22. The German Press and radio are predicting an Allied invasion of Europe at any moment. They assure the people of the Reich’s defensive strength and urge the Germans to be calm and steadfast. The Berlin radio says that German troops are manning all the coasts of occupied Europe. Allied correspondents on the German frontier say that the German fears of the stability of morale on the home front are indicated by articles in the German Press deploring criticism of the Nazi Government and even of Hitler himself for involving Germany in a war against Russia. The Stockholm newspaper “Allehanda” says that the German Foreign Office spokesman, Schmidt, told foreign correspondents that Hitler would not capitulate, even if all the German cities were destroyed. Schmidt declared that the speculation regarding a separate peace between Russia and Germany was loose talk and Allied propaganda.
