RUSSIAN DRIVES TO ENCIRCLE KHARKOV
Another Twenty Places Recaptured GERMANS’ LAST RAILWAY LINK UNDER FIRE LONDON, August 20. Tonight’s Soviet communique reports further substantial successes by the Russians in their drive to encircle Kharkov. Soviet forces have advanced three to 64 miles and have recaptured more than 20 towns and villages. North of Kharkov, the 'Red Army which is driving westward has left Kharkov more than 90 miles behind by the recapture of a town 30 miles southwest of Sumy and 70 miles north of Poltava. There is good news also of the Russian drive on Bryansk and in the area south-west of Spas Demensk. The Russian forces have improved their positions in both sectors. Earlier today, a correspondent said the Soviet offensive on the Kharkov area had narrowed down the enemy escape corridor to 13 miles. The only railway from Kharkov still in German hands, the one running south-west to Poltava, is reported to be under fire from Rusian artillery.
Russian bombers have been busy attacking enemy air bases and railway junctions behind the lines, particularly at Bryansk and Roslavl.
