BAYEUX TAPESTRY
ADOPTION BY THE NAZIS. The famous Bayeux tapestry of the invasion of England by William the Conqueror has been the subject of a lecture by Professor Jankuhn, at Rostock. When the Germans entered Bayeux, the tapestry was put in a safe place. “Professor Jankuhn explained that the story represented on the tapestry is a sort of royal Germanic saga concretely symbolised,” says the “Frankfurter Zeitung.” “Two of its traits of Germanic character are to be found, namely the joy of fighting and love of war, and chivalrous respect for the enemy.” There is danger that it may prove a short step from proving that the Bayeux tapestry is German in character to proving that it therefore must surely belong to Germany in every way and be due for transfer to Germany.
