STARVATION IN FRANCE
PRICES ON THE MARSEILLES BLACK MARKET. A Swiss newspaper reports that the inhabitants of Marseilles are suffering great privations. “The monthly food card is hardly sufficient for the normal supply of one week.” A perfectly forged imitation ration card can be bought for GOO francs (roughly £3 10s) at pre-war exchange). Butter can be bought on the black market for 600 francs a kilogramme (2.2 lbs), green coffee 3000 francs, and salad oil 900 francs a litre (about 1:; pints). Bouillabaisse, the favourite dish of Marseilles, sung by Thackeray in a famous poem .costs from 250 to 300 francs.
