STATE CONTROLLED MINE

DECREASED OUTPUT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 18. An indication of the operation of one of the Waikato coal mines since the introduction of State control following the strike last year was given by the chairman of the Taupiri Coal Mines Limited, Mr E. W. Alison, at the annual meeting of the company today. The effect of the control upon the company was stated to be a decrease in production and increase in costs. Mr Alison said that the great need of increased coal production in war time was fully appreciated, but unfortunately in 1942 a strike affected the output. was imposed in order to effect a quick settlement of the dispute, Mr Alison said. The company had cooperated wholeheartedly in implementing the measures and would continue to do so.

The output for the year was reported to be 211,058 tons, 775 tons below the previous year.
