Mrs Eric Shaw, Te Ore Ore, has returned from a visit to Hawke’s Bay.
Dr. E. E. Porritt, Wanganui, was elected a life member of the North Island Motor Union at its annual conference in Wellington yesterday. Captain Justin Power, Independent candidate for the Masterton seat at the forthcoming general election, is a guest at the Midland Hotel, Masterton.
Mr H. C. Holyoake, of Riwaka, Nelson, who is well-known as a collector of natural curiosities, is visiting the Wairarapa. He is staying with his daughter, Mrs A. Herrick, Carterton.
Lance Bombardier Bert Gaskin, of Castlecliff, Wanganui, who is on furlough from the Middle East, is at present staying with Mr and Mrs Les Adams, Cornwall Street, Masterton.
The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Josephine, the two-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs H. N. B. Naysmith, of Perry Street, Masterton. The funeral will be a private one.
The engagement is announced of Margaret Julia, only daughter of Mrs G. Sexton, and the late Mr A. H. MacLachlan, Masterton, to Rex Rickford John, elder son of Mr and Mrs F. Collett. Palmerston North.
With nearly sixty years of public life to his credit, a remarkable record probably unparalleled in the Dominion, Mr E. W. Alison retired yesterday from the chairmanship of Taupiri Coal Mines Limited, a position he has occupied for 43 years. Mr Alison became chairman at 49 years of age and he is in his 93rd year. Besides his business interests Mr Alison was a member of the Legislative Council from 1918 to 1932. He represented Waitemata in the House of Representatives from 1902 to 1908.
Mr A. Grayson (Auckland), was elected president, and Mr R. W. Roydhouse (Carterton), and Mr W. H. Brown (Manawatu), vice-presidents of the North Island Motor Union at its annuol conference yesterday. The following nominees of associations were declared appointed to the council: —Mr F. G. Farrell. Auckland; Mr N. F. Little, Taranaki; Mr J. A. Duffill, South Taranaki; Mr P. D. England, Wanganui; Mr W. H. Brown, Manawatu; Mr R. W. Roydhouse; Mr E. Palliser, Wellington, and Dr. W. D. Fitzgerald, Hawke’s Bay.
There was a particularly large and representative attendance of town and ' country residents at the funeral this morning of the late Mr Jeremiah Savage. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev. Father Moore, who also conducted the graveside service in the Masterton Cemetery. Wreaths were sent by ,ihe management and staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.; the management and staff of the New Zealand F.C.D. Co., Ltd.; the management and staff of Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd.; J. Elliott and Co.; management and members of staff of the Wairarapa Seed Co.; chairman and executive officers of Te Ore Ore River Board; staff of Messrs Dalgety .and Co., Ltd. The pall-bearers were Messrs W. Myers, R. J. Harman, T. Hanley, D. B. Curry, J. Culloty and P. J. O'Connor.
