SECONDARY INDUSTRY

NATIONAL SURVEY URGED VIEWS OF MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. POST-WAR RECONSTRUCTION. “In order to meet post-war reconstruction and the rehabilitation of the forces, it is the opinion of this council that the Government should frame a national plan for the whole of New Zealand so as to facilitate the setting up of industries in the localities best suited to them,” was a resolution passed at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. A circular letter suggesting, that representations should be made to the Government in the matter was received from the Timaru Borough Council. The need of new secondary industries being diverted to smaller centres was stressed.

Councillor H. E. Gardner said secondary industries would fill spaces in the district. The district was ideal for raising plants, etc., for use in the manufacture of chemicals. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said a national survey was required to allocate industries to districts in relation to their outlets etc. A survey would enable post-war reconstruction to be met. “With the establishment of secondary industries and the tunnel through the hill, Wellington will be our busiest suburb,” said Councillor Gardner.
