WIDOWS OF CIVILIANS
BENEFITS MAY BE INCREASED
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. • (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “It is not proposed to bring the rates of Social Security assistance to widows of civilians up to those available for war widows, but steps are being taken under the proposed amendments to the Social Security Act to give a greater measure of aid to widows of civilians,” said the Minister of Social Security, Mr Parry, replying to an urgent question by Mr Denham (Government, Invercargill) in the House of Representatives yesterday. He asked the Minister to raise the benefit for the civilian widow and thereby reduce the disparity between the benefit granted to the civilian widow and the pension of the war widow.
Mr Parry said the widow of a man who was taken away from his usual occupation and became a member of the Armed Forces was able to obtain no compensation in the event of the death of her husband on active service. It was considered that the widow of a soldier who was sent overseas and who died in the service of his country should receive the fullest consideration. As opportunity occurred, however, the rates of benefit for civilian widows would be improved and increased beyond the present rates.
