OBITUARY
MR JAMES BOYNE McKENZIE. The death occurred suddenly last night of Mr James Boyne McKenzie, of Masterton. Mr McKenzie was spending the evening at the house of a friend when he was overtaken by a heart attack and died immediately. Mr McKenzie, who was 77 years old, was the last surviving son of Mr Alexander McKenzie, who settled at Boyne Terrace, Homebush, in 1860. After the death of his father, Mr McKenzie carried on the family farm until 1920, when it was sold to Mr W. Moore, the prominent Ayrshire breeder. In his younger days, Mi- McKenzie was a well known runner and footballer. During the last few years he had been living in retirement in Masterton, where he was a well known member of the Park Bowling Club. He was also a life member of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. He is survived by a sister, Miss H. Y. McKenzie, of Wellington. A funeral service will be held at the Mortuary Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service, Church Street, tomorrow, at 11 a.m., prior to leaving for the Karori Crematorium. NURSE SPELLMAN. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Nurse Bridget Spellman, a well-known and highly respected resident of Masterton, at the age of 75 years. The news of her passing will be received with deep regret by her many friends. The late Nurse Spellman was an active member of the Wairarapa branch of the Registered Nurses’ Association.
Born in Derrylow, Roscommon, Ireland, she came to New Zealand almost 60 years ago. She resided at Christchurch, Wellington and Palmerston North before coming to Masterton about 40 years ago. For over 30 years she had conducted a maternity hospital in Masterton, retiring five years ago. In her professional capacity she had given invaluable service to the community and all who had the benefit of her ministrations will always remember her sympathetic and loving treatment. She possessed 'all of the many qualities that are required to make an efficient nurse, and those who had the privilege of knowing her, will forget her sunny nature, her generous disposition, and her’ unfailing kindness to all in distress.
“Thus to relieve the wretched was her pride, And e’en her failings leaned to virtue’s side.”
The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving St. Patrick’s Church, following mass at 9 a.m., foi' the Masterton’Cemetery.
