FEATHERSTON
RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF SUB-CENTRE. . (“Times-Age” Special.) At a general meeting of the Featherston Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, Mrs Sharp presided over a large attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Riddiford, Lawson, Cassidy and Peene. The new secretary, Mrs F. Benton, was welcomed. It was reported that during the month the service men on furlough had been met and welcomed by Red Cross Society members, and the sick and wounded were given gifts. Two cases of local distress had been dealt with by the visiting committee. The Junior Red Cross members have completed their course of lectures and will sit for their examinations on Wednesday. First aid lectures will commence again on Tuesday. The following garments and articles were completed at tne rooms and dispatched to the Centre in July:—47 pads, 2 longsleeved pullovers, 7 betty bags, 24 B.P. covers, 15 hospital articles, 23 handkerchiefs, 3 face cloths, 1 pair of pyjamas. - 17 surgeon’s towels. Mending for the Anzac Hospital has been done every week.
SOLDIERS’ DANCE LARGE CROWD AT TOWN HALL. The soldiers’ dance in the Town Hall on Saturday night was largely attended, and was an enjoyable gathering. Excellent music was provided by Mrs Ashton’s orchestra, and much appreciated extras were played by Misses C. Saba and G. Fraser. Mr Ashton was M.C. The artistically decorated table was the work of Miss Alexander. The Junior Patriotic Committee was responsible for the supper arrangements. WAR-TIME SERVICE LARGE GATHERING OF CITIZENS. There was a large attendance at the Citizens’ Wartme Service last evening, when representatives of the Home Guard, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides were present. The Rev. G. Knowles Smith, of Greytown, was the speaker, and gave a very interesting address. The vicar, the Rev. J. R. Higgs, was in the chair, and Padre Troughton read the lesson. The combined choirs were in attendance and gave a fine rendering of the anthem, “Through the Love of God Our Saviour.” Personal lems. Mr and Mrs F. H. Benton have returned from a visit to Whangarei. Miss A. Stuart, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs Benton. Miss Brenda Bloxam, who has been spending a holiday in New Plymouth, was in Featherston for a few days before returning to Wellington yesterday.
Able Seaman Arthur Schenkel and Mr Schenkel, Auckland, are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Graham.
Golf Competition.
In a Stableford competition played by the local Golf Club members, Mrs R. Donald, H. McCarty and W. H. Rowles tied for first place.
COSY THEATRE “PARDON MY SARONG.”
On Wednesday night there will be shown the excellent comedy, “Pardon My Sarong,” in which Lou Costello and Bud Abbott are seen at their best.
