CARTERTON

MUNICIPAL BAND MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age’’ Special.) Mr J. M. Nicholls presided over a meeting of the Carterton Municipal Band Committee ' last night. There were also present: Messrs W. Spooner, A. Kay, W. Knowles and C. J. DeLacey. Apologies were received from Messrs A. G. Rabbitts and W. Hall. The treasurer reported that the band had a credit balance. A letter was received from the patron, Mr W. B. Allen, who is now residing in Palmerston North, in connection with the annual birthday party given by him to band members, suggesting that owing to recent bereavements it be dropped meanwhile. This course was agreed to and the secretary was authorised to write to Mr Allen and wish him “Many Happy Returns ’ on his 96th birthday. BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. At the cprd tournament held in connection with the Carterton Boy Scouts, the prizes were won by Mesdames A. Jensen, J. Hooper, H. Goodin and Mr G. Goodin. RACING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. The following report will be submitted to the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club on August 28:— “The Appropriation Account discloses a loss of £272 18s 2d, and a profit of £B3 13s 5d from farming operations, making a net loss on the year of £lB9 4s 9d. The usual provision of depreciation has been made. The course and property has not yet been officially handed over to the club. The Public | Works Department are now renovating i the premises, and it is hoped to have [ everything in working order at the earliest date. We were one of the clubs who suffered in the cut in racing dates and representations were made to the conference to give those clubs who were deprived of racing preference in allocating dates this year. However, no date was allotted, and application has been made to the conference for a reconsideration of the matter. This, we are advised, will be dealt with at their next meeting. We have recorded with deep regret the death of Mr C. ACameron, who was a staunch supporter of the club.” The report is signed by W. Howard Booth (president).

Spooner, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, have recently received from their son, Private Neville Spooner, a letter, the envelope of which contains drawings of some 23 beetles he had seen in Africa. A copy of the “N.Z.E.F. Times” was also sent, containing a reproduction of the drawings on the envelope. Personal. Mr R. Bassett, chairman of directors of the Dalefield Dairy Company, while presiding at a meeting held in the company’s offices, Carterton, yesterday, was taken suddenly ill. He received medical attention and was removed to the Greytown Hospital for treatment. Football. The following is the Carterton third A grade team to play Old Boys at 1.30 p.m. at the Carterton Showgrounds tomorrow: Goodin, Workman, Bilton. McPhee, Parker, Lenihan, Walsh, Bond, Rayner, Butcher, McPhee, Parker, Oberg. Rozska, Berry. Emergencies: Hannah, Catt. Women’s Division Dance. A dance will be held by the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union in the State Theatre. Carterton, tomorrow evening, the proceeds from which will .be devoted to the wool funds. A waltzing competition should create considerable interest. REGENT THEATRE ‘•LAUGH IT OFF” “Laugh It Off” (a comedy featuring Tommy Trinder) and “High Sierra” (a thrilling crime story starring Ida Lupine and Humphrey Bogart) will be finally shown tonight. “The Yellow Caesar,” a special short, will be screened at the Regent Theatre on Saturday night only.
