MADE BY WHIRLWINDS ON E-BOATS IN SMALL HARBOUR IN BRITTANY. QUEEN MARY SEES OPERATION PLOTTED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.0 a.m.) RUGBY, August 12. With reference to the action in which four E-boats were blown up. another E-boat or armed trawler destroyed and yet another E-boat set on fire by Whirlwind bombers, the Air Ministry news service says the scene of the attack was the small harbour at the mouth of the River Abervrgh, in Brittany. The enemy was completely surprised. The air pilots saw some of the boat crews rushing about, trying to remove tarpaulin covers from guns, while others leaped overboard. The only damage to our aircraft was a few bullet holes in a Whirlwind, caused by fire from a shore battery. When the attack was finished the, harbour was full of smoke.
The operation was seen plotted at a group headquarters by Queen Mary, who was being shown round the operations room. Later as Queen Mary was taking tea in the officers' mess, she was given news of the Whirlwinds’ success.
