S.M. COURT
DECISION RESERVED IN BY-LAW CASE.
(“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Carterton S.M. Court yesterday. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the case of Geo. A. Vincent v. Roy Ralph, a claim for £44 12s 6d for board and lodging.
The case was adjourned till September 8 in which A. Archer was charged with having driven a motor lorry on June 12 at Carterton without due care and attention.
A. E. Ansell (Transport Department) charged F. Diedrich with having travelled at an excessive speed in Carterton along the main highway on June 21. He was fined £2.
F. J. Purcell was charged by the Traffic Officer that, on June 3, at Greytown, he drove his car at a speed exceeding 30 miles per hour. A fine of £3 was imposed. The Carterton Borough Council charged W. J. C. Wells, A. E. Hack. P. Bain and H. Catt with having, on June 4, contrary to the Dog Registration Act, 1908, permitted dogs to wander at large and without control in High Street. Carterton. After having heard the evidence, the Magistrate reserved his decision.
Similar charges against B. Archer, E. S. Ball and A. H. Smith were adjourned pending a decision on the above cases.
In the case, Annie Humphries v. A. E. Heick, a claim for £349 15s 6d, judgment was given for plaintiff for £199 15s 6d, with court costs. WELCOME TO SOLDIERS GATHERING AT PARKVALE. A very enthusiastic welcome homo was accorded Lance Corporal G. Campbell and Private Leo Smith at the Parkvale Hall, there being a large attendance. Most enjoyable dancing was spent to music provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton's Orchestra. A much appreciated extra was played by Miss Ward. Novelty dances were won as follows: Monte Carlo waltz, Miss N. Williams and Mr L. Herrick. Spot waltz, Mr and Mrs R. Parker. Spot waltz, Mrs W. King and Mr Geo. Janies. Mr V. J. Ashton acted as M.C.
During the evening Mr C. Jensen Senr., chairman of the Parkvale and District Patriotic Committee, welcomed the guests and hoped that they would spend an enjoyable time while on furlough. The ladies of the district provided and presided over the supper.
Women’s Division. At the monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers Union, Miss Card contributed a much appreciated solo. Two new members were elected. It was decided to hold a children's party in the State Theatre on Friday, August 27. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Arcus and Mrs H. Hodder for their valuable work in connection with the W.D.F.U. patriotic dances. It was decided to amalgamate with the W.C.T.U. in celebrating the 50th anniversary of women's franchise in New Zealand.
A competition for a fruit cake donated by Mrs H. Peters was won by Miss Avis Hodder, Carterton. Mrs L. Rayner-was the winner of the wandering shilling. Competitions were won as follows: — Best bloom, Mrs Couper I and 2; best shrub, Mrs Couper 1 and 2; best parsnip, Mrs Standen 1 and 2, Mrs Hicks 3; best onion, Mrs Standen 1 and 2.
Earthquakes.
A sharp earthquake was felt in Carterton yesterday afternoon at 3.2 C p.m., and another one at G. 3 p.m.
REGENT THEATRE TWO ATTRACTIONS. Tonight there will be presented Tommy Trinder and Jean Colin in the outstanding comedy, "Laugh It Off,” and Ida Lupino and Humphrey Bogart in the thrilling crime story, "High Sierra.”
